Attachment Parenting Gone Wild! (Like Really, Really Wild)
News from The Stir:

The Bravo series Extreme Guide to Parenting has introduced us to some fascinating folks who parent in all different kinds of ways. Some people may think I’m one of those “extreme” types of parents, so when I heard about the family who practices attachment parenting like I do, I was very intrigued to see how they come across and in particular, how they are received.

Meet the Axness family — mama Christian, daddy Nate, and baby Ella. They practice “conscious attachment” which they feel strengthens the emotional and physical bond between parent and child, so they never let the kid out of their sight. Ever.

And that’s where I differ. I’m all for date nights without baby. And yet I’m still all about co-sleeping, breastfeeding, and babywearing. As with all parents, the way you do things even if it’s the same general philosophy is going to be different. One of the things that Christian says in the episode is that life changes when you have a baby — very true. But she adds that she and her husband adjust their life to meet the child’s needs. This is true for me, somewhat, but not all of the time. And yet I still believe that the Axness family is doin…………… continues on The Stir

Mayim Bialik defends her attachment parenting, extended breastfeeding
News from UPI.com:

LOS ANGELES, April 25 (UPI) — Mayim Bialik has spoken out again in defense of attachment parenting and extended breastfeeding.

The 38-year-old Big Bang Theory star is mother to two sons, Miles and Fred, and is a vocal proponent of attachment parenting. The actress made headlines in 2011 when she posted a picture of herself breastfeeding Fred when he was 3 years old. She attributed the subsequent backlash to U.S. culture’s “very, very bizarre relationship with breasts.”

Attachment theory forms the basis of attachment parenting, and states that children feel most secure when another person is physically present. A strong emotional bond is said to be formed if caregivers consistently give sensitive and emotional care to the child in addition to constant physical presence. For parents, this can mean bed-sharing — allowing children to sleep in bed with them from infancy — or extended breastfeedin…………… continues on UPI.com

Kim Kardashian Offers Parenting Advice Because Now She’s an Expert on That …

Kim Kardashian is apparently just full of helpful advice these days. First she gave some relationship advice to her sister Khloe over her rumored relationship with rapper French Montana, because obviously she’s an expert on dating rappers. Now a very pregnant Ciara has shared that the reality star has shared a ton of parenting advice with her, because Kim’s obviously an expert on that now too.

And apparently Kim’s all set to let her daughter North West be anything she wants to be, but with one particular, very Kardashian-esque requirement.

Defining Attachment Parenting: part 4
News from Charlotte Observer:

Written by Attachment Parenting International
Maybe you never knew there was a name for it—the unique way you raise your child—but it’s in tune with your child’s needs and with your own needs, and your family lives it out daily. Or, perhaps, you do know there is a name for it, with many synonyms and variations, but you live it out without being defined.

…It’s hit the news, blogs, social media and forums where parenting approaches are more contentious than politics or religion.

Some may know what they know about it from a critique or a comment, but every day, growing numbers of parents find the name and the communities that come with it—and breathe a sigh of relief to find welcome, encouragement, information and freedom from judgment.

…From professionals to media, it’s not just parents who are discussing Attachment Parenting.

In this four-part series, we’ll explore just what this approach to parenting is all about, show how it’s not so much the specific parenting practices that define Attachment Parenting as much as the attitude behind them, dispel common myths and offer ideas to incorporate the spirit of Attachment Parenting in your home.

Mayim Bialik: Attachment Parenting Is Not To Blame For My Divorce
News from Huffington Post:

Despite speculation that Mayim Bialik’s divorce was caused by attachment parenting — the controversial style of parenting she and estranged Michael Stone practice — the actress confirmed on Tuesday that her parenting style had nothing to do with the split.

“There’s all sorts of marriages, people break up for all sorts of reasons. We don’t need to blame attachment parenting for this one,” Bialik told

Co-Parenting: 5 Steps to Avoiding Conflict Escalation
News from Huffington Post:

It goes without saying that we all want what’s best for our children. Unfortunately, trouble arises when what’s best for our children has multiple meanings. Conflicts often escalate between divorced co-parents, when one parent wants to rear the child one way, and the other parent wants to rear the child a different way… often a diametrically opposed way. Since these differences in child-rearing were likely also contributing factors to the demise of the marriage in the first place, it’s not surprising to see them continue post-divorce. So, what are divorced parents to do? How can they co-parent and co-raise their children, when they don’t see eye-to-eye? Is a trip to the local courthouse the answer, when Mom wants Billy to play soccer and Dad wants Billy to play piano? Is it really necessary to run up attorney…………… continues on Huffington Post

Stop Thinking Attachment Parenting Is Overparenting Already!

Stop Thinking Attachment Parenting Is Overparenting Already!
News from The Stir:

A friend recently posted how he didn’t understand why parents bit the nails of their infants instead of just using a nail clipper. Those clippers are sharp and seeing blood gush out of your little one’s finger may scar you from ever using nail clippers again. Some resort to nibbling them off ourselves. It has to be done somehow. In the thread, someone called that helicopter parenting. Thou shall not helicopter parent! Is a motto of mine (not really) so I wasn’t into this comment. But then I thought, before nail clippers were invented, guess how baby’s nails got cut? Yep. Mama bit them off.

What we’ve also been doing since the dawn of time is Attachment Parenting — way before any label was given to anything. Before there was formula, mothers breastfed. Before there were fancy cribs, we co-slept. Before there were continues on The Stir

Did Attachment Parenting Contribute to Mayim Bialik’s Divorce?
News from TIME:

Far be it from us at Family Matters to issue judgment on a person’s undoubtedly excruciating decision to divorce. For days, we’ve refrained from weighing in on actress Mayim Bialik’s announcement that she and her husband are calling it quits, cleaving her famously assembled attachment-parenting unit in two.

But two things made us realize that Bialik’s divorce announcement is ripe for the parsing: she is already in the public eye as a celebrity, where famous people’s choices are picked apart every day. And she has also been an outspoken and ardent advocate of attachment parenting, extolling the child-first virtues of this intense style of up-close-and-personal, wear-your-baby, breastfeed-until-middle-school approach to raising kids in a blog and a book she released earlier this year.

In other words, it seems fair game to wonder whether her parenting practices had anything to do with the demise of her

Dear H.G.: Glad you have the presence of mind to realize you should make a “gifts response plan” to handle the anticipated avalanche. This year, Chanukah comes well before Christmas. That offers a nice opportunity to differentiate between the two holidays and, should the pile of presents be really excessive, to donate some of them (at least, any duplicates) to Christmas toy drives sponsored by local fire departments.

‘Blossom’ actress, ‘attachment parenting’ advocate Mayim Bialik to divorce …
News from Washington Post:

LOS ANGELES — Mayim Bialik is splitting from her husband of nine years.

The 36-year-old actress says in a statement posted online Wednesday that she and husband Michael Stone have decided to divorce. The couple has two young sons.

Bialik recently released a book about attachment parenting, but says the philosophy that encourages forming close bonds with near-constant physical contact played no role in the couple’s split.

The Emmy-nominated star of CBS’ ”The Big Bang Theory” says “relationships are complicated no matter what style of parenting you choose.”

She says divorce is “terribly sad, painful and incomprehensible” for children and adds that the couple’s sons remain their priority.

Bialik first gained fame as the star of the 1990s sitcom “Blossom.” She holds a doctoral degree in neuroscience from UCLA, specializing in obsessive-compulsive disorder in adolescents.

Jamie Lynne Grumet, who posed on the cover of TIME breastfeeding her three-and-a-half-year-old son has slammed the magazine for its portrayal of her, and attachment parenting.

The mother of two, 26, from Los Angeles, told ABC News: ‘My intentions were to help relieve the stigma attached to breast feeding past infancy, but the photo I saw wasn’t the one that we were trying to pose for. It made me really, really sad’.

Mrs Grumet explained that the cover image was an ‘outtake’ from the shoot, which when placed alongside the words ‘Are You Mom Enough?’ looked ‘confrontational and detached.’

Attachment parenting: It may cause more stress, less happiness
News from Christian Science Monitor:

A new study shows that attachment parenting can lead to moms reporting more stress and lower levels of happiness. Why might this parenting style be bad for mom?

Here’s another shot in the debate over “attachment parenting,” the newly popular style of American mothering (and yes, it almost always refers to moms) that includes “always-on” mommy behavior such as baby wearing, extended breastfeeding, and co-sleeping.
