Parenting Tips While Going Through Divorce

Parenting Tips While Going Through Divorce
News from Huffington Post:

Parents don’t want to hurt their children. Few intend to do damage, but it unfortunately happens when parents are unaware of the impact that their actions or words have on their kids. Because divorcing people are in pain, in transition and in temporary chaos, they may be momentarily self-absorbed and distracted. At a time when children need reassurance the most, parents may be unaware of their needs. In order to help our children adapt to a separation or divorce, we need to keep a few things in mind and create a child-centered divorce. Children are the innocent and powerless victims who will deal with the consequences throughout their lives.

You will be connected forever. Adults must realize as soon as possible that unless one parent decides to withdraw from his or her child’s life, parents will be in touch with each other forever as co-parents and may eventually become co-grandparents. A divorce only dissolves the marriage, not the entire family.

Working towards peace between you and your ex-spouse will save years of stress and add to the quality of life for everyone. You can create change by monitoring your own behavior.

You must maintain intergenerational boundaries. It is critical to maintain boundaries between adult problems and children. Please protect your…………… continues on Huffington Post

Parenting Study Author Regnerus Admits Faults With Data
News from Advocate.com:

Professor Mark Regnerus, whose controversial study deeming gay people as ill equipped at being parents, now says some of his methodology wasn’t quite right.

The researcher behind a controversial family structure study released earlier this year has admitted that the tactics used to analyze his data, which initially claimed that gay parents were unfit to raise children, were flawed. He still, however, stands behind his findings.

Mark Regnerus, a professor at the University of Texas, released the results of the study in June to the journal Social Science Research. The study compares the adult lives of 40 people and claims to have found a difference in the lives of those who grew up with a mother in a lesbian relationship and those who grew up with two married heterosexual parents who were still married.

The study was criticized for not examining the lives of adult children of stable lesbian parents. Many of the study’s children considered to be raised in gay households were not being raised by parents in a committed same-sex relationship, whereas many of the children in heterosexual households had two married parents. Parenting perspectives: Keeping our Houdini clothed
News from In-Forum:

It’s no secret we want our children to learn to do things for themselves. After all, it makes our life as parents much more manageable.

My son, Carter, a 5-year-old who loves life and also happens to have Williams syndrome, has had many bumps in the road while learning everyday care like dressing, brushing teeth and potty training.

Many 5-year-olds still need help and guidance in these tasks, and Carter is no exception.

He recently made great strides in learning to dress and undress himself. He can even tackle those rascally buttons and zippers. For you parents of children with special needs out there, we all know what an amazing milestone it is when your child learns to master those little finger pinchers. For many, this comes naturally, but for others it’s not so easy pickin…………… continues on In-Forum

Jean Hayes: Unplanned parenting group
News from Winona Daily News:

2012-10-29T00:00:00Z Jean Hayes: Unplanned parenting groupBy Jean Hayes Winona winonadailynews.com

If you are in the unplanned role of parenting a child or children of friends or relatives, was stepping up to the challenge a surprisingly difficult adjustment?

For me as a grandparent, there is no doubt, that in the end, joys will out-weigh the problems. But I had been focused on the next phase of my life. I had not thought about handling issues that are new (such as ever-present technology and social media). I had not thought about child-rearing during retirement or the later years of my career when my life had more daily flexibility. And how do you handle the role confusion and questions about who has responsibility and authority — especially if the parenting arrangements were made informally  or suddenly?

If you are grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, older siblings, foster parents or friends in an unplanned parenting/guardian role (formal or informal) join us! The group is somewhat self-directed, but Jen Whetstone, LICSW of Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center and Angela McQuinn, LSW Winona Area Public Schools are masters at facilitating discussion and providing information…………… continues on Winona Daily News

How to save Halloween when Mother Nature threatens to ruin it [Family …
News from Louisville.com:

Other than Christmas, I can’t think of a holiday that children look forward to more than Halloween.  If your kids are like mine, they’re probably more than eager to dress up as vampires, witches, or their favorite character so they can go door-to-door begging for candy and cavities.  But, what do you do when the weather doesn’t permit trick-or-treating?  Luckily, you can still give your child a great Halloween without having to brave the elements.  Here are a few simple (and inexpensive) suggestions on how to execute a successful, last minute Halloween party for your children and their friends:

1.       Give friends a heads up that you’ll host a party in the event the weather doesn’t permit trick-or-treating, and tell them to bring their children in costume.

2.       Choose a time that isn’t too late- 6:30-7:00pm is ideal.  That way everyone is able to eat dinner prior to the party, and the party will be over at a reasonable time for a school night.

3.       Tell the adults to bring at least one bag of candy.

4.       Have a FEW snacks on hand.  We’re talki…………… continues on Louisville.com

Parenting past the trials of divorce

Parenting past the trials of divorce
News from Austin Herald:

Published 5:37pm Saturday, October 27, 2012

QUESTION: Is it possible to co-parent successfully after divorce?

ANSWER:  Co-parents can be successful as long as both parents recognize that the well-being of their children is the very first goal. Even though we have not been able to be husband and wife “until death do us part,” we will be parents forever. Children develop healthy identities by being able to love and enjoy both their parents.  Here are important things to remember:

Agree that the parent who assumes most of the day-to-day responsibilities for child-rearing has the authority to make plans and decisions without fear of being contradicted or undercut.

You are the adults. Do not put your children in the middle of communications or conflicts. Vow not to allow your feelings of anger about each other surface in front of the children. Co-parenting requires that you act with dignity and maturity.

Praise any effort your co-parent makes to stay involved. Even if the effort is limited to telephone calls or occasional weekends with the kids, affirm the benefits of that involvement.

Find a way to keep communication open.  For the sake of your children, you need to find a way to raise concerns and settle problems. Stay in touch through the telephone or e-mail. Think seriously about how to…………… continues on Austin Herald

Parenting Style May Shape Kids’ Political Views As Adults
News from Huffington Post:

By: LiveScience Staff
Published: 10/25/2012 08:01 AM EDT on LiveScience

Parenting style and childhood temperament might play roles in shaping one’s political mindset, new research suggests. Specifically, kids who have fearful temperaments and are raised by parents who value obedience are more likely to endorse conservative ideologies as young adults, the study found.

A team led by psychology researcher R. Chris Fraley of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign examined data from 708 children who originally participated in a National Institute on Child Health and Human Development study.

Based on the parents’ answers to questionnaires when the kids were 1 month old, the researchers determined which parents fell into the authoritarian camp (those who, for example, agreed with the statement “Children should always obey their parent…………… continues on Huffington Post

Parenting: Warning to sexy costume makers –
News from beware of werewolves – Belleville News Democrat:

— Oct. 22, 2012

Yikes. It’s that time of year when the Halloween costumes are out on the shelves again in all their sexy, skimpy glory.

I know I’ve harped on the costumes companies are creating for kids in the past. But it seems to be getting worse, not better.

Over the years I’ve watched as witch or princess or nurse costumes for pre-teens and teens seem to shrink. Literally. It’s no longer a costume for a scary, wicked witch. It’s a sexy witch costume consisting of about the same amount of material found in women’s lingerie. Nurses are just as bad, if not worse.

And when you get into adult-sized women’s costumes? I don’t even want to go there. The manufacturers might as well preface each costume description with ‘Hooker’ or ‘Prostitute.’ Heck, most of them are already described as a ‘sexy’ this or a ‘sexy’ that. Ugh.

What happened to dressing up for Halloween as something scary or funny or creative? Do we need 12-year-old girls running around in Sexy Nurse, Sexy Witch or Sexy Vampire costumes?

You know it’s out of control when even the 11-year-old goes through the costumes and turns her nose up at all the girlie ones with the comment: “They are all so … inappropriate.”

Inappropriate indeed. She nailed that one.

Obviously people are…………… continues on beware of werewolves – Belleville News Democrat

People around the world held candle light vigil for Amanda
News from Examiner.com:

MSNBC News reports that hundreds of people in a number of cities around the world paused to remember bullying victim Amanda Todd on Friday October 19, 2012- just over a week after the 15-year-old Port Coquitlam girl committed suicide following years of Internet sexual exploitation and bullying by her peers.

Todd killed herself on October 10, 2012. A month before her death, she posted a video to YouTube in which she flips through dozens of cards, writing her story in short, black sentences.

Her last words on the video were: “I have nobody. I need someone.”

Police have launched an investigation into all aspects of her case, but were forced earlier this week to deny on-line rumours and accusations that named a Vancouver-area man as Todd’s tormentor. Police said the rumours and resulting Internet vigilante threats were delaying their investigation.

A Facebook page had been set up listing memorials for Todd from communities in the Vancouver area to cities in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Vigils were to be held in at least five American stat…………… continues on Examiner.com

Pet Parenting Tips Around the Holidays
News from Lake City Reporter:

(NewsUSA) – Pet parenting can be as crazy as it is fun, especially around the holidays. Add the stress of hosting family and friends, and many pet parents end up ignoring Fido or Fluffy in favor of cooking a feast or wrapping last-minute gifts. So, how do you find balance between preparing for the holidays and tending to your pet?

Rose Hamilton — Chief Marketing Officer at Pet360.com, the ultimate pet-parenting destination — offers the following tips to keep your pet top of mind during the holiday season.

* Keep Plants and Goodies Out of Reach: Many traditional holiday plants, like poinsettias and mistletoe, can be harmful to your pet’s health, so be sure to keep these out of reach. Also, refrain from sharing specific holiday treats with your tail-wagger, particularly fruitcake and sugar-free goods, which contain dog-toxic ingredients.

* Decorate Wisely: Holiday decor can be dangerous for pets, so it’s important to take certain precautions when decorating. Place fresh trees in discreet corners, and keep lights, ornaments and tinsel off the lower branches. Deter your pet from electrical cords by spraying the cords with lemon peel or bitter orange tea.
